Dr. habil. chem., Professor Ivars Kalviņš is a full member of both the Latvian Academy of Sciences and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He has served as the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis and has been leading the Medical Chemistry Department since 1992, in addition to heading the Carbofunctional Compounds Chemistry Laboratory.

He is a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including being an Officer of the Order of the Three Stars.

Dr. Kalviņš’s primary research focuses on the discovery of physiologically active substances, particularly synthetic analogs of natural amino acids, and the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds. His work also includes the development of pharmaceuticals for treating central nervous system disorders, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and immunomodulatory conditions. Additionally, he explores the molecular mechanisms behind pharmacologically active substances and the biological processes involved in immunomodulation.

Dr. Kalviņš is known for his pioneering contributions to the field of medicine, including the creation of the anti-ischemic drug Mildronate and the immunostimulator Leakadin. He has also developed innovative pharmaceutical compositions incorporating Mildronate.
