Jānis Vucāns, born on February 9, 1956, in Riga, is a Latvian mathematician, university lecturer, and politician. He is a member of the “Latvijai un Ventspilij” party and currently serves as a member of the 14th Saeima, representing the Union of Greens and Farmers. From 2000 to 2010, he was the Rector of Ventspils University.

Vucāns graduated from L. Paegles Riga 1st Secondary School in 1974 and earned a degree in applied mathematics from the Latvian State University in 1979. In 1988, he defended his thesis in physics and mathematics at the State University of Belarus, and in 1992, he was awarded a doctorate in mathematics from Latvia.

His academic career began in 1977, holding various positions at the Latvian State University before moving to Ventspils University in 1998, where he led the Department of Economics and Management. In 2003, he became a professor and was later recognized as an expert in management science by the Latvian Science Council. Vucāns has worked or interned at universities across Europe, including France, Switzerland, Finland, and Germany, and has coordinated several international research projects. He has also been a key figure in organizing international scientific conferences.
