Ojārs Spārītis is an esteemed art historian, head of the doctoral program at the Latvian Academy of Arts (LMA), and president of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. He studied philology at the University of Latvia (1974–1979) and art science at the Latvian Academy of Arts (1981–1987), earning two doctoral degrees in art history by 1998.
His research focuses on Latvian and European Renaissance architecture, sacred art, and cultural heritage preservation. Since 1998, he has led the restoration of numerous Latvian monuments, including the House of Blackheads in Riga. Spārītis has been involved in various international projects, including leading the “Letonika” research program (2013–2017). He has lectured at prestigious universities worldwide and authored over 20 monographs and 300 articles.
In addition to his academic work, Spārītis serves on several national and international heritage committees, including UNESCO. He has been honored with numerous awards, including the Officer’s Cross of the Order of the Three Stars (2001) and the Commander’s Cross of Italy’s “Al Merito della Repubblica Italiana” (2004).
