S. Frederick Starr is the founding chairman of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute and Silk Road Studies Program, a joint research center affiliated with the American Foreign Policy Institute (AFPC) in Washington and the Institute for Security and Development Policy in Stockholm. He is a Distinguished Fellow for Eurasia at AFPC and author of the acclaimed book Lost Enlightenment, which explores Central Asia’s history from the 8th to 11th centuries and has been translated into 20 languages. Starr is currently working on a follow-up biography of Al-Biruni and Ibn Sina.
Starr has focused on reopening continental transport routes through Central Asia and Afghanistan, highlighted in his book The New Silk Roads. He frequently writes on the region for journals like Foreign Affairs and major newspapers. Previously, Starr was the founding chairman of the Kennan Institute, Vice President of Tulane University, and President of Oberlin College. He played key roles in establishing the University of Central Asia and the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy. He holds degrees from Yale, Cambridge, and Princeton, and is also a jazz musician and founding member of the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble.
