Tarmo Soomere is a renowned mathematician and marine scientist. He graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1980, obtained his PhD in oceanology in 1984, and earned a Doctor of Mathematics degree in 1992. In 2005, he became a Professor of Coastal Engineering at Tallinn University of Technology. Soomere has been a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences since 2007 and was elected its President in 2014, a role in which he also serves as the country’s de facto Chief Science Advisor. From 2020 to 2023, he chaired the European Science Advisors’ Forum (ESAF) and currently leads the International Science Council (ISC) European Members group.
Soomere’s research primarily focuses on wave climate analysis, wave-driven coastal processes, mitigating marine hazards, and coastal protection strategies. He has authored over 200 research papers and numerous popular science articles and essays on science policy.
